It's Little Red Riding Hood like you've never seen her before in this action-filled sequel to the hit Beauty and the Beast.Sorcha knows every inch of the forest, but a spontaneous visit to her grandmother thrusts her into the middle of a brutal conflict between shifters and an unknown force in the woodlands.

Red and the Wolf An Adult Fairytale Romance Once Upon a Spell Volume 2 Vivienne Savage 9781946468086 Books

Another fine fairy tale retelling from Vivienne Savage. Like her take on Beauty and the Beast, Red and the Wolf is a character study as much as it is an action-packed tale of one kingdom's fight against encroaching evil. In this story, we get to see the cost of sorcery played out upon more common folk. Where Anastasia and Alistair of B&B are royalty, Sorcha (Red) and Conall (the Wolf) are more your every day people - though extraordinary in their abilities and their sense of duty to their king and country.

I love the slow-building romance between Sorcha and Conall, but I love even more the adventure as they embark on their mission. I don't like to slip spoilers in, but let me just say Red is no silly girl, the wolf isn't just a sly beast, and the stakes are high in this rather epic adventure.

Red and the Wolf An Adult Fairytale Romance Once Upon a Spell Volume 2 Vivienne Savage 9781946468086 Books Reviews

Most of the story, I really enjoyed. It was a nice twist on fairy tales. SPOILERS

The only part that I didn't like was what happened to Ferghus, her childhood friend. He was an arrogant character, but I believe he loved her. He wanted to marry her, but she only saw him as a good friend. His mistake was believing the villain could help him convince her to marry him. So, with the villains dark magic taking him over, the author chose not to write a way of releasing him from the villains hold. No...the author writes the MCs killing him with the friend making the final blow. While at the end of the story, once the villain is killed, all infected with the dark magic reverts back to normal. Why couldn't the author have wrote the scenario of the best friend reverting to normal and finding his true love? This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Both MCs were virgins, which was refreshing. In this case, wolf shifters wait for their mate. Yes.....finally! The reason behind it is that once the deed is done they are mated to the other person. Sounds logical to me. Otherwise, what would make the "mate" special if he had been a man-whore. Overall, I really liked this twist on an old fairy tale. I recommend it.
First, before reading this it isn't necessary to read Beauty and the Beast, the first in the series, but it is helpful to gain the backstory.

Sorcha isn't some little girl on her way to grandma's house in this Frisky retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, she is a grown woman and a trained fighter. After finding her grandmother missing and a wolf conveniently placed at the bloody scene, she immediately assumes the worst. However, there is so much more going on and it is up to her and Conall to discover the truth.

I personally love this series and bought the whole set after reading the first installment. It was totally worth it. If you liked the first book, you will love them all. The author has created a magical and fascinating world which will draw you in from the start. Each story is not just one but a mesh of parts from different fairytales with one main fairytale as the focus. The setting is also a mixture of different cultures, with each country representing another culture. If you like puzzling out stories, this series is full of puzzles to solve.

The characters are very fun and easy to get attached to. The author gives all her characters her attention and draws you in with her details. This story focuses more on the different shifter groups living in Cairn Ocland and introduces us to the characters who will star in later the later books.

If you love shifters, Scottish romance, fairytale retellings (with a bit of frisky fun on the side), and strong female leads with loveable (though slightly unrealistically so) male counterparts who ooze sexiness, this series is for you.
I loved Beauty and the Beast (as in the first book in the series, not to be confused with any other incarnation of the tale), but I was worried going into this one for a couple of reasons 1- sometimes the second book is just a flop, nowhere as good as the first or as good as you build up your expectations for it; 2- would it really flow with the first and feel like part of a series vs loosely connected standalone?; and 3- how much could really be done with this particular fairy tale? Welllllllll.... turns out I had nothing to worry about. I actually loved this more than B&B!

There are a few things recognizable from the original story the trip to grandma's, the classic red cape, a wolf, a hunter. And yes, the "what big eyes you have!" bit shows up. But while some of the classic elements are included, they're not used in the same context, and the story is all the better for it.

As a fan, I knew to expect a strong heroine, but Sorcha turned out to be a bastion of badassery. Honestly, she was my favorite part of the story. While the wolf was indeed big and bad, and did want to get his mouth on her, he's not the bad guy, and she sure as hell doesn't need saving from a hunter. She IS a hunter. Sorcha faces down a wolf shifter, a bear shifter, and the Big Evil (no spoilers as to what it is). She's scared, but she doesn't back down, which is so much more impressive to me than rushing in headlong without a thought.

There's a lot more adventure than romance here, but that's not to say the romance isn't there. Sorcha and Conall are building a relationship, a real partnership, and that relies on more than tumbles between the sheets. And Conall is the kind of alpha who's secure in his manhood and appreciates a woman strong enough to stand by his side *swoon*

Besides the characters, the imagery is vivid, and probably the most detailed of the V Savage books that I can think of, but without going overboard and getting boring. Anastasia and Alistair play small but important roles in the story, and besides helping the series arc flow, it's just nice in general to get an update on how they're doing. Ooooooh, and be on the lookout for Easter eggs that point to possible future stories! I totally snickered, and I'm betting others will, too. Can't wait for the next one!
